The Women's Singles Trophy is one of the few sterling silver trophies that you'll see in the Lower Mainland and it very nice looking. But don't take my word for it. See it for yourself. This trophy is NOT the original. The event was started in 1926 with a silver trophy put up by one W.H. Day for annual competition. As was not unusual in the day, it was added (right on the trophy) that the trophy was "to become the property of the winner for three successive years. It just so happened that one woman (Mrs. T.F. Teevan) won three straight years (1927-29) and she exercised her right to the trophy. The trophy was donated back to the club in 1972 for annual Women's Handicap Singles (evidently by the same Mrs. T.F. Teevan, who must have been quite ancient by this time). This event only ran four years (1973-76).
Between 1930 and 1964 the women are listed as Mrs. with their husband's initials.
There have been five women who have had exceptional success in this event: The aforementioned Mrs. T.F. Teevan won 4 times (in the space of only 5 years). Mrs. G.S. Hockley, Mrs. C.C. Donevan and Dorothy Macey all won the singles title 5 times. But Dorothy Foreman won a record total 7 Singles Titles. On a number of occasions the club champion went on to become the B.C. Provincial Women's Club Singles Champion of Champions. This event's trophy, also sterling silver, was first awarded in 1946. Club champions who went to win this prestigeous event are noted above. The event was abandoned after 1978.
The Men's Singles Trophy is also a nice piece of hallmarked silver as you can see in this photo.
